FAQ

1. What is Systems Biology?

Systems biology aims to explain how higher level properties of complex biological systems arise from the interactions among their parts. This new field requires a fusion of concepts from many disciplines, including biology, computer science, applied mathematics, physics and engineering.

The impetus for the development of this new field comes in part from the availability of novel technology -- allowing, for example, precise measurements of protein localization, state and activity in single cells, or statistical correlations between disease processes and changes in the expression of certain genes -- together with a new excitement about how theoretical approaches can drive new experiments and deliver novel insight.

2. How do I apply?

Applications and materials are due on December 7, 2007.

  • We encourage on-line submission of the application. The identification number for the Systems Biology PhD Program is 8900.
  • You can request a paper application by going online, by calling (617) 495-5315, or writing to:
Harvard University GSAS, Holyoke Center, 3rd floor 1350 Massachusetts Avenue Cambridge, MA 02138

3. What are the admissions statistics?

Based on two years of experience, on average we receive 150 applications and approximately 12 places are offered. About 2/3 of the students offered places accept.

4. What are the eligibility requirements?

The typical student has a strong background in one of the disciplines relevant to Systems Biology (such as biology and related subjects, mathematics, engineering, physics, computer science) and a strong interest in interdisciplinary research.

5. Whose lab can I join?

Subject to Program approval, students may choose dissertation advisors from any science department at Harvard, including the research departments of the 11 Harvard-affiliated teaching hospitals.

6. Will I receive financial support?

Our program will cover tuition and stipend of all students admitted into the program. Students are encouraged to apply for fellowships. In 2007/2008 the stipend level is $29,004 per year.

7. Does Harvard offer housing?

Accommodations in graduate residence halls are available. In addition, there are approximately 1,500 apartments available for graduate students in Harvard-owned buildings.

8. Can I come for a visit to check out the program?

Interviews are scheduled in late January/early February. Usually, about twenty students are invited to interview of whom around twelve are eventually selected. Students who are invited to interview will be given a tour of representative facilities, and meet with Program faculty and current students.
